“Finding clinical and professional skills training and ongoing consultation regarding clients with hoarding behaviors is exceptionally challenging. I’m passionate about lasting change via continuing education and consultation to ensure more well-trained clinicians to address this issue in the counseling and social services professions.”

My education on hoarding disorder began in my own home long before researchers had identified and studied this phenomenon as a separate disorder. I bring my lived experience alongside my professional education and experience to bring a depth of understanding and expertise few possess. I am passionate about educating others to help both those like my mother who struggle with the disorder and to assist families still struggling with this issue, whether the children are in the home or have “escaped” and are waiting for a crisis to occur.

My Approach & Philosophy

MY APPROACH & PHILOSOPHY

ceci-garrett-washington-hoarding-therapist

Hoarding disorder and the individuals who have it remain highly stigmatized. While media coverage of cases has been beneficial to bring this disorder to public awareness (this is how I first learned about the issue despite having a lifelong, up-close experience of this disorder), most of the continuing representation of the disorder focuses on the clutter. Hoarding disorder is about much more than clutter.

My trainings are designed to reduce the stigma associated with HD and bring dignity to the individuals, families, and communities impacted and the providers who are passionate about helping them.

Training includes hands-on activities, breakout sessions for functional assessment, treatment planning, and discussion of unique ethical dilemmas inherent in treating a disorder that focuses on downsizing an individual’s possessions.
